A 32-year-old Polish national died today after having been spotted, unconscious and facing up, in the sea at Ghajn Tuffieha Bay.

The man, who had been swimming, was taken to shore after people who had been in the area noticed that something was wrong, preliminary police investigations indicate.

The police were informed at around 12:20pm that their assistance was required at the bay, following which a medical team was called, and the man was taken to Mater Dei Hospital in an ambulance.

He was later certified to have died.

Duty magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo, who was informed about the case, ordered an investigation and appointed a number of experts to assist with it.

Police investigations are ongoing.
