Elderly people is the theme chosen by presenter and journalist Saviour Balzan for this week’s edition of Reporter.

The guests invited for this week’s edition are Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly Justyne Caruana, Nationalist MP Mario Galea and gerontologist Marvin Formosa

The elderly population in Malta and around the world is continuously growing, both thanks to a better available healthcare system and because of an increasingly active lifestyle.

Reporter will discuss the national strategy for active ageing, a plan that stretches to 2020. The discussion will also delve into the situation of old people’s homes and about the standards that these residential homes should be adhering to.

Why did the secretary set up a new mechanism to deal with complaints about old people’s homes? How will these complaints be verified? How will the dignity of old people, including those suffering from dementia, be ensured? Is there a shortage of beds in these facilities?

Reporter is produced and presented by Saviour Balzan, assisted by journalist Frederick Attard.
