Opposition leader Simon Busuttil called on the International Organisation on Migration (IOM) to back programmes through which refugees in Malta and other EU countries are transferred to the US.

During a meeting held with IOM and the UN development agency officials in New York, Busuttil highlighted the fact that the US had in recent years taken some 2,000 refugees from Malta.

Busuttil noted that the US is in the process of taking in 500 migrants from Malta and said that IOM should support such initiatives and expend them to other EU countries.

In a separate meeting, Busuttil discussed the situation in Libya, Syria and Iraq with UNDP representatives and reiterated the PN’s support for international efforts aimed at curbing ISIS.
