Oscar Pistorius jailed for five years

27-year-old athlete learns his sentence for the culpable homicide of his girlfriend in February 2013

Oscar Pistorius faced a South African court today to learn his sentence for the culpable homicide of Reeve Steenkamp on 14 February 2013 in his Pretoria home.

Judge Thokozile Masipa sentenced him to five years in jail for the culpable homicide of Reeva Steenkamp and a three-year suspended sentence for a firearms charge.

The incident saw Pistorius firing several shots through a locked bathroom door, killing Steenkamp. Pistorius maintains that he thought the movement behind the door was a burglar and that he did not realize his girlfriend was in the bathroom.

Pistorius was acquitted of murder after a two-month trial but was found guilty of culpable homicide.
