A newborn baby boy survived for five days after being dumped in a storm drain in the region of New South Wales, Australia.

The seven-day-old infant was found abandoned at the bottom of a drain almost three metres deep, which was covered with a 200kg concrete slab, still wrapped in a hospital blanket.

Two cyclists discovered the child after they heard him crying in the drain. At first they thought the noise was coming from a kitten in distress but soon realized it was a human child.

Police believe the boy had been pushed through a small opening to the drain and were concerned he may have suffered internal injuries from the fall.

It took six men, including three police officers, to lift the slab and rescue the boy. His survival is even more surprising given the temperatures have been reaching 40C in the region.

The child is now in Westmead Children’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition. A woman was charged with the attempted murder of the child. She was refused bail and will appear in court this week.
