Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has laid flowers at a makeshift memorial in Sydney for the victims of a central city cafe siege which left three people dead, joining hundreds of others who left flowers and messages.

The two hostages who were killed after the 16-hour siege have been identified as the manager of the Lindt cafe, 34-year-old Tori Johnson, and 38-year-old barrister Katrina Dawson.
