A Palestinian woman has been shot after she tried to stab an Israeli with a knife in occupied East Jerusalem.

The woman stabbed the man in the back on Wednesday, an Israeli police spokesperson said.

However, the man managed to take out his gun and shoot her. The woman was seriously injured while the man sustained light injuries.

She has been identified as Shurooq Dweiyat, an 18-year-old from Sur Baher neighbourhood of East Jerusalem.

In a separate incident, an Israeli soldier was lightly injured in Kiryat Gan, located south of Tel Aviv, when a Palestinian allegedly stabbed him and attempted to steal his weapon. The Palestinian was shot and killed during the confrontation.

Wednesday's incidents comes amid growing clashes across the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, between Israeli forces and settlers on the one hand and Palestinians on the other.

Two Israelis were killed by Muhannad Halabi, 19, in Jerusalem on Saturday.

He was shot dead after fatally stabbing the two men and injuring a woman and a two-year-old child.

Early on Sunday morning, Fadi Alloun, another 19-year-old Palestinian, was fatally shot by Israeli police after allegedly stabbing an Israeli teenager - a claim his family disputes.

Tensions have surged as clashes grow in frequency across the occupied territory.

At least 600 Palestinians have been injured by Israeli forces since Saturday, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.

On Tuesday, an Israeli soldier shot and killed a 13-year-old Palestinian child in the Aida refugee camp near Bethlehem.

He was the sixth Palestinian child killed by Israeli forces or settlers in 2015, according to Defence for Children International - Palestine Section.

Israeli settlers have also launched dozens of attacks against Palestinians and their property in recent days.
