Spencer Stone, hailed as a hero after a French train terror attack, has been stabbed in Sacramento, California, international media report.

Police say the stabbing took place on a Sacramento street corner in the early hours after an argument escalated, the BBC reports.

According to reports, Stone was  attacked while defending a friend, and is currently in a stable condition at a local hospital, however, the BBC adds, investigators said on Thursday they did not expect Stone to survive the attack and initially treated the crime as a homicide.

Stone, 25, is one of three Americans that helped to thwart a terror attack on a French train in August. The three Americans (Stone, an off-duty airman, Alek Skarlatos, a member of the US National Guard, US student Anthony Sadler) and British Chris Norman were hailed as heroes and awarded France’s highest honour – the Légion d’honneur- after they tackled a man who was carrying a Kalashnikov rifle, an automatic pistol with ammunition clips and a box cutter knife.

During the train attack, the men threw the attacker to the floor of the carriage, removed his guns and restrained him, and Stone was slashed in the process, later requiring surgery to reattach part of his hand.

The three Americans also received awards from Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter and met President Barack Obama at the White House.
