Foreign affairs minister George Vella expressed his solidarity with the people of Turkey following a bomb attack that took place in Ankara this morning, leaving at least 86 dead and many others injured.

In condemning the attack, Vella underlined Malta's continued support to those determined to address violence and extremism in Turkey as well as the broader Mediterranean region.

Turkish government officials said the explosions were a terrorist attack carried out by a suicide bomber but no group has yet claimed responsibility.

Vella also fully endorsed the message issued earlier by the High Representative of the European Union Federica Mogherini and Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn which reiterated the EU's commitment to a strong engagement with Turkey.
