A large construction crane collapsed in lower Manhattan in New York City, killing one person and injuring at least two others.

The incident occurred at around 8:24am ET along Broadway in the Tribeca neighbourhood.

The Fire Department of New York confirmed the fatality and said is on the scene responding to the accident.

"It was right outside my window," witness Robert Harold told the AP news agency. "It was a crashing sound. You could feel the vibration in the building. I looked out the window and saw it lying in the street."

A city official told WNBC that the crane struck several buildings and damaged numerous parked cars as it crashed to the street. An employee at the company, who said he was a manager but refused to give his name when contacted by the Associated Press, said an investigation is underway into the collapse but declined further comment.
