Rodrigo Duterte will take his oath to become president of the Philippines in a small ceremony at the presidential palace in Manila, in front of about 600 guests.

Reportedly, only state media is permitted to cover the event.

The controversial 71-year-old former mayor of Davao city, known as "the Punisher", seized the election by promising a "bloody war" on crime.

Another one of his promises is to end corruption and spread wealth around the country.

Duterte is credited with a dramatic reduction in crime in Davao, but rights groups say it was at the expense of human rights.
