A video and transcript of the foul-mouthed exchange between the gunman who killed nine in a shooting rampage in Munich yesterday evening and an onlooker in a balcony have surfaced on the internet, shedding light on the 18 year old shooter's state of mind.

The mobile phone recording of the attacker insisting that he is a a German citizen has lead to speculation as to whether the man was a right-wing extremist or the victim of racial bullying. German intelligence indicate no apparent link between the suspect and Islamic militants.

Germany woke up none the wiser as to the motive behind yesterday night's unprovoked attack that claimed the lives of nine people. The shooting spree ended with the gunman killing himself.

"The perpetrator was an 18-year-old German-Iranian from Munich," police chief Hubertus Andrae told reporters after the incident. His identity was established on the basis of witness statements and closed circuit television.  The attacker's body was later found in a side street, not far from the shopping mall where much of the shooting happened.

Two other men who were arrested as they fled the scene were found to have “nothing to do with the incident.”

Police say the suspect was not known to authorities and officers were searching his apartment for clues.

He had lived in the city "for a while", Mr Andrae said. The motive is yet to be established.

Earlier this week, a teenager claiming to be inspired by ISIS stabbed passengers on a German train before being shot dead by police. Eight days earlier, 84 people were killed when a man drove a large truck through a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, France, in an attack later claimed by ISIS.
