The Vermont senator, together with others, endorsed Hillary Clinton as the Democratic party tried to push through the discord and find common ground.

“Secretary Clinton has won the democratic nominating process the and I congratulate her for that,” Sanders said.

"Any objective observer will conclude that -- based on her ideas and her leadership -- Hillary Clinton must become the next president of the United States," Sanders told delegates, spurring a cascade of cheers.

Earlier in the evening, Sanders' fans had booed any mention of Clinton, who will accept the party's presidential nomination on Thursday.

Some of Sanders’ supporters broke into tears while others wore duct tape emblazoned with the words "silenced" over their mouths.

By the time Sanders took the stage for the night's closing address, much of the anger had been overshadowed by speeches promoting party unity. Sanders implored his supporters to consider a country under Trump's leadership.

"If you don't believe this election is important, if you think you can sit it out, take a moment to think about the Supreme Court justices that Donald Trump would nominate and what that would mean to civil liberties, equal rights and the future of our country," Sanders said.

"Hillary Clinton will make an outstanding president and I am proud to stand with her here tonight," he said before he left the stage.

US first lady Michelle Obama delivered a speech that shade on Trump without mentioning his name creating a distinction between a positive role model in Clinton and a negative one in Trump.

"The hateful language... from public figures on TV does not represent the true spirit of this country," she said, to loud cheers and applause.

"Don't stoop to their level. Our motto is, when they go low, we go high."

She said she wanted her husband to be succeeded by "somebody who knows this job and takes it seriously" and that could only be Clinton.

“Because of Hillary Clinton our daughters, and all our sons and daughters, now take for granted that woman can be president of the United States,” Obama said.

In other remarks, she praised Clinton as a "true public servant" who had shown "devotion to our nation's children" and "never buckles under pressure".

"This election -- every election -- is about who will have the power to shape our children for the next four or eight years of our lives. And I am here tonight because in this election, there is only one person who I trust with that responsibility -- only one person who I believe is truly qualified to be President of the United States. And that is our friend, Hillary Clinton," Obama added.
