An annual flea market in the French city Lille has been cancelled this year over “security reasons”.

Speaking at a press conference this morning, socialist Lille mayor Martine Aubry announced that the flea market, which is the city’s most popular event, will not be held this year due to “security reasons”.

"It's a question of maintaining moral responsibility,” Aubry said. “Therefore, I think we should suspend the 2016 flea market.”

The mayor explained that the issue was about monitoring the people and the items in the area.

"The volume of goods and the crowd would be impossible to control," she said, adding that she came to the decision with a heavy heart.

The flea market is normally held in the first weekend of September and hosts between one and two million visitors each year.
