The doctor who declared that Donald Trump would be “unequivocally the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency” has admitted he wrote the letter in just five minutes.

The Republican presidential nominee in December produced a note from Dr. Harold Bornstein, his physician for 35 years, declaring him as having an excellent bill of health.

The letter declared the 70-year-old’s health “extraordinary” and his overall well-being as “astonishingly excellent”. Two weeks before the note was written, Trump tweeted that he had “instructed my long-time doctor to issue, within two weeks, a full medical report”, adding that it would “show perfection.

However, Bornstein has now told NBC News that he may have overstated the case “so that they [the Trump campaign] would be happy”.

“I think I picked up his kind of language and then I just interpreted it to my own,” he said, but insisted that he stands by his assessment. “His health is excellent, especially his mental health. His brain is switched on 24 hours a day.”

“Dr Bornstein has been Mr Trump’s doctor for decades and is already familiar with his excellent health records,” a spokesperson for Trump said in response, adding that Trump would be happy to release more of his medical records if his rival for the US presidency Hillary Clinton promised to do the same.
