A car exploded after ramming the gates of the Chinese embassy in the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek, killing at least one person

A car exploded near the Chinese embassy in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek on Tuesday, killing its driver and wounding two embassy staff and one woman, the Kyrgyz health care ministry said.

According to AKIpress news agency, the Nissan Delica car intruded into the territory of the Chinese Embassy through the western gates and exploded in the centre of the area in front of the ambassador's residence.

Several buildings were reportedly damaged and fragments from the car are said to have flown a distance of 200 metres from the blast.

AKIpress also quoted Kyrgyz security officials describing the blast as a terrorist attack.

Kyrgyz security officials are at the scene conducting an investigation.
