Austrians are voting in a re-run of the presidential election held last May which was narrowly won by Alexander Van der Bellen, the former leader of the Green Party. Van Bellen had beat far-right candidate Norbert Hofer of the Freedom Party, however Austria's highest court overturned the result because of irregularities in the count.

Political pundits are analysing what effect, if any, the Brexit and Trump results will have on the election results, given that the May's result came before both elections took place.

Van der Bellen has made Brexit a part of his campaign, accusing his opponent of wanting to hold a similar referendum in Austria.

"Let us not play with this fire. Let us not play with Oexit," Van der Bellen said in their last televised debate.

With Italians also going to the polls this weekend and polls suggesting a loss for Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, a Hofer win would be a double blow to Europe's political establishment.

The result of the May 22 run-off was overturned because of irregularities in the count of postal ballots, mostly due to election officials cutting corners as they raced to complete the count. The re-run was then postponed because the glue on the envelopes for some postal ballots did not stick.
