US President Donald Trump has begun rolling back healthcare reforms introduced by his predecessor Barack Obama.

Within hours of his inauguration, Trump signed an executive order to repeal and replace President Obama's Affordable Care Act. The repeal of the Affordable Care Act had been a central electoral promise.

Chief of Staff Reince Priebus said President Trump's executive order was for federal departments to "minimise the economic burden"' of the act, but he gave no details.

Stories about Donald Trump's inauguration as 45th President of the United States of America dominated global headlines and local front pages this Saturday, 21st January 2017.

Trump's inaugural speech focused on domestic issues, breaking with tradition and taking a swipe at the very institutions that elected him.

‘‘For too long, a small group in our nation’s capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have bore the cost. Washington flourished, but the people did not share in its wealth.

He pledged to end the “American carnage” of rampant crime and abandoned factories.

The new President also signed a proclamation declaring a national day of patriotism.

"From this moment on, it's going to be America First. We will follow two simple rules: Buy American and hire American," he said.

Mr Trump accused Washington politicians of abandoning citizens to industrial decline and spiralling rates of crime.

"This American carnage stops right here and stops right now," he said.

"From this day forward it's going to be only America first"

Riot police had to use pepper spray to control street protests in Washington after the ceremony. Six officers were injured and over 200 arrests were made. At least one car was set ablaze.
