A statement from Kensington Palace has revealed that “their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting their third child. The Queen and members of both families are delighted with the news.”

Kate Middleton is currently suffering from morning sickness and therefore will not be carrying out ger royal duties today, as she is being cared for at Kensington Palace, according to reports.

The new child will be fifth in line to the throne, after Prince Charles, Prince William, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Betting on a third child for William and Kate took off around the time of Charlotte’s christening, when she was just nine weeks old.

The couple talked openly about having a family when they announced their engagement and planned ahead by saving the top of their wedding cake back in 2011, which is traditionally served at the christening of a first-born child.

On a tour in Singapore in 2012, when asked how many children he would like to have, William said he was “thinking about having two”.

Prince George and Princess Charlotte can expect a new brother or sister early next year.
