A 17-year-old Latvian attacked and injured several people, with an axe, in a Swiss village on Sunday night.

According to police, there is no indication of terrorism.

St Gallen canton (state) police have said that the rampage began shortly after 8pm (local time), when he attacked several people at a town square in Flums, in the northeast of Switzerland.

The attacker then fled with a stolen car, which was later involved in an accident. Roads were closed and helicopters flew overhead, as they tried to apprehend the suspect, according to reports.

The teenager continued to flee on foot, attacking more people at a gas station, where he was arrested, said police.

Authorities claimed that they believe attacker acted alone.

No information on a possible motive has yet been identified.
