Tory MP Charlie Elphicke suspended over ‘serious allegations’

The Conservative politician said he is unaware of the nature of the ‘serious allegations’ which were passed to police, and denies any wrongdoing

Tory MP Charlie Elphicke has been suspended over ‘serious allegations’ which his party says have been referred to police.

Elphicke has said he does not know the nature of the allegations, and denies any wrongdoing. He said that the media had been informed of his suspension before he knew of it.

Tory chief whip Julian Smith confirmed Elphicke’s suspension, but did not elaborate on the claims made against him.

Elphicke, 46, has held his Kent seat since 2010, and was government whip between 2015 and 2016.

He also sits on the Commons Treasury Select Committee and is a member of the European Research Group of pro-Brexit Tory MPs.

His suspension comes after serious sexual harassment claims were made in Westminster, which has claimed its first resignation with  Michael Fallon quitting as defence secretary.

Other MPs facing investigations over allegations of inappropriate behaviour are Damian Green and Mark Garnier.
