Ex-Welsh Labour minister found dead

Former Welsh communities secretary who faced investigation into allegations about his personal conduct has taken his own life

Ex-Welsh Labour minister, Carl Sargeant, has taken his own life. Sargeant was suspended from party and stepped down after allegations about his personal conducts were made.

Sargeant lost his ministerial job as cabinet secretary for communities and children last week, after the First minister Carwyn Jones told him allegations had been made against him on Friday.

A family statement said his relatives were "devastated beyond words" at the loss of "the glue that bound us together".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the death was "deeply shocking news".

As a mark of respect for Sargeant, the Welsh Assembly's business for Tuesday has been cancelled.

First Minister Carwyn Jones said "Carl was a friend as well as a colleague and I am shocked and deeply saddened by his death," First Minister Carwyn Jones said.

"He made a big contribution to Welsh public life and fought tirelessly for those he represented both as a minister and as a local assembly member," he said. "He will be a great loss both to our party and to the Senedd."

Sargeant was married and had two children.

A spokesman for North Wales Police said it was investigating the incident in Connah's Quay, Flintshire.

"There are no further details available at present," the spokesman added.
