Egyptian military in ‘terrorist’ targets air strike following deadly mosque attack
Egyptian president Abel Fattah al-Sisi vowed to respond with "brute force" to the attackers
Egypt’s military has engaged in air strikes over ‘terrorist’ locations, in response to an attack on a mosque Friday, which left more than 300 people killed, and countless others injured.
The strikes targeted mountainous areas around Bir al-Abed, according to witnesses and security sources.
The bomb and gun assault, which took place in north Sinai, was the deadliest attack in Egypt in recent memory.
The attack started with a bomb explosion in an al-Rawdah mosque, as Friday prayer were under way. Militants in four off-road vehicles then approached and opened fire on worshippers, according to a source in the military.
Following the attack, Egyptian president Abel Fattah al-Sisi addressed the nation, defiantly promsing to respond with “brute force”, and he gave his condolences to the victims’ relatives.
“This act will only increase our will and unity,” al-Sisi said. “The police and military will avenge our martyrs and restore peace and security.”
