According to monitoring group Airways, a total of at least 5,961 civilians were killed by coalition airstrikes; a figure the coalition says is in truth, much lower

At least 800 civilians were killed in strikes in Iraq and Syria by the US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State, since the campaign began in 2014, reported the coalition.

The estimate, released in the monthly report, said coalition strikes unintentionally killed at least 800 civilians between August of 2014 and October of 2017, was much lower than figures provided by monitoring groups.

The monitoring group called Airways said that a total of at least 5,961 civilians were killed by the coalition airstrikes.

“We continue to hold ourselves accountable for actions that may have caused unintentional injury or death to civilians,” said the coalition in its report.

Since the beginning of the campaign, which is an effort to bring down Isis militants, the coalition has been responsible for the carrying out of over 28,000 strikes and has received 1,790 reports of potential civilian casualties, according to the report.

It is still in the process of assessing 695 reports of civilian casualties from strikes, which were carried out in Iraq and Syria.

The coalition added that it always goes to great lengths to avoid civilian casualties.
