Israel strikes Syrian military base

Israel launched an airstrike at a military base outside of the Syrian capital Damascus, Syrian state TV reported

Israeli fighter jets launched surface-to-surface missiles at a military installation outside the Syrian capital Damascus overnight, Syrian state TV reported.

Although the air defences responded to the attack, intercepting two of the missiles, the rest caused damage to the base. The extent of the damage is not clear yet, although the TV report spoke of “material losses” at the base.

A video was posted on twitter, showing the moment air deference intercepted a missile.

The Israeli military has not confirmed that it carried out the strike.

Earlier in the day, pro-government media outlets had said the air defences were triggered by a missile attack, while people in the capital heard explosions in different areas.

UK-based monitoring group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported explosions near Damascus, which were said to have been caused by a suspected Israeli attack.

Isreal has previously hit weapons sites before in a bid to prevent arms being transferred to Syria’s Lebanese ally Hezbollah. So far, however, the target of this reported attack is still unclear.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has previously warned that Israel would in no way allow Iran to establish any military presence in Syria.
