The Trump for America Group has accused republicans of attempting to discredit Robert Mueller, who is investigating the link between Russia and Trump’s electoral campaign, of having illegally obtained access to thousands of emails from the president’s transition team.

The complaint comes after a warning from top Democrat Adam Schiff that Republicans are trying to stop the Trump-Russia inquiry and damage Mueller’s reputation.

It was revealed on Saturday that Mueller’s investigation team had obtained access to numerous emails sent and received by officials on the president’s White House transition team, which was operating in the period between his election and his swearing-in.

Eric Swalwell, a Democrat on the House intelligence committee, said that the accusations were just another attempt to put Mueller in a bad light, and maintained that the emails were stored on a US government public email system.

Moreover, Renato Mariotti, ex-federal prosecutor, said the Republicans were “playing politics - but this is a bad sign for them”, and he highlighted that there was nothing inappropriate in Mueller obtaining emails from a third party, as this was normal criminal investigation procedure.
