Great White shark circles boat during Martha's Vineyard fishing tournament
'Curious' shark takes fisherman by surprise off Martha Vineyard
The Monster Shark Tournament during the past weekend off Martha's Vineyard lived up to its name, but it's not what was caught that is making news, but what was tagged.
It was the first day of the two-day tournament Friday afternoon when Capt. Mike Pierdinock saw what every sport fisherman hopes to see one day.Off in the distance the familiar fin rose out of the water -- a Great White was heading toward his boat.
"She proceeds around the boat, and she's coming around, and she makes this angle; and we can tell by the way she is and the way she is presenting herself she is in more of a curious mode," Pierdinock said.
The crew tagged the curious shark, while the captain shot some pictures. It is not legal to catch Great Whites. They must be released or tagged."And she opens up her mouth and she was basically mouthing and tasting the chum bucket," Pierdinock said.
For 20 minutes, the shark kept circling the boat, he said. While the tournament targets the mako, thresher and blue shark, the Great White grabbed all the headlines.
