Filming in Malta for the remake of ‘Papillon’, the 1973 classic film starring Dustin Hoffman and Steve McQueen, was successfully completed last week.

The remake was mainly filmed at the water tanks in Kalkara and in Rabat, according to the Malta Film Commission.

The commission quoted tourism minister Edward Zammit Lewis, who reportedly said that the film industry is going strong with a total of 16 international productions happening in Malta in 2016. Many jobs are being created and millions of Euros injected in the economy, it said.

‘Papillon’ is directed by Michael Noer and scripted by Aaron Guzikowski. Charlie Hunnam stars in the title role, with Emmy Award winner Rami Malek being cast as Louis Dega.

The movie is based on convicted felon and fugitive Henri Charriere’s best-selling 1969 memoir.

PAPILLON is a Red Granite Pictures production, with Joey McFarland, Riza Aziz, David Koplan, Ram Bergman and Roger Corbi producing.
