The ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ host has been confirmed as the next in line to host the 89th Academy Awards in February.

“Yes, I am hosting the Oscars. This is not a prank,” he tweeted.

The news comes just months after Kimmel earned largely positive reviews for his turn as host of the 2016 Emmy Awards, a show he also hosted in 2012.

The news was not met with surprise, especially since Kimmel has hosted the American Music Awards multiple times.

According to The Telegraph, for years, ABC has pressed the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to select Kimmel as the host of the Oscars, Hollywood’s biggest awards show.

ABC, where “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” has been a late-night staple since 2003, broadcasts the awards show under a long-term contract and has wanted to use the platform to boost Kimmel’s profile.

The Telegraph went on to report that Disney executives, some of whom have been displeased with the quality of the Oscars telecast in years past, are convinced that the comedian has the right touch for the job.

“The academy, which has final say over the producers and host of the telecast, has politely opted in favor of other choices. But ABC, which pays roughly $75 million a year to broadcast the ceremony, received more creative input in the show as part of a contract renegotiation this year,” the newspaper said.
