Deputy permanent representatives to the European Union meeting this morning to discuss proposals for roaming charges sought to prove to European citizens that they were not “boring Eurocrats”.

A video posted on social media by the Maltese Presidency of the Council of the EU features the diplomats – during a meeting chaired by Malta’s deputy permanent representative Neil Kerr – taking part in the mannequin challenge.

The video carried the caption: "Whoever said Eurocrats are boring?! Ambassadors kick-off the 2017 Maltese Presidency of the Council of the EU's chairing of COREPER I by doing the #MannequinChallenge."

The mannequin challenge is the latest viral trend to have hit the online world since November and features people imitating mannequins and freezing for the camera while Rae Sremmurd’s Black Beatles plays in the background.

The viral trend spread round the globe – thanks to American teenagers who started performing it in high schools - and thousands of videos have since emerged.

Videos featuring US First Lady Michelle Obama, Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, sports stars and musicians have been made.

But in a marked contrast, soft acoustic music was chosen in the EU ambassadors’ case.
