Real Madrid had a great chance to go ahead after six minutes. Dani Carvajal exchanged possession with Isco before going face to face with Jan Oblak. The Slovenian goalkeeper managed to block Cavajals’s effort before Karim Benzema could take full advantage.

Four minutes later, Zinedine Zidane’s side went ahead. Casemiro sent an excellent cross towards Ronaldo who headed past Oblak.

The home side nearly scored again on the 16th minute. From a corner, Toni Kroos delivered a cross towards Raphael Varane whose header was well saved by Oblak.

Atletico hit back and were denied by Keylor Navas a minute later. Kevin Gameiro went clear through on goal but found the Real Madrid shot stopper in his way, as the Costa Rica international stretched out his right hand and made a superb intervention.

On the 25th minute, Luke Modric hit a low shot from distance that ended up marginally wide.

Real Madrid had another opportunity on the 29th minute. Ronaldo went on the left flank and sent a cross towards Benzema whose overhead volley flew just high.

Failing to produce any real threat in the early stages of the second half, Diego Simeone decided to opt for a double substitution on the 57th minute. Fernando Torres took Gameiro’s place, while Nicolas Gaitan replaced Saul Niguez.

However, Real Madrid kept going forward and had a promising opportunity on the 67th minute. Kroos sent the ball rolling towards Benzema inside the penalty area and the French forward fired a powerful drive that went well off target.

Real Madrid’s efforts paid off on the 73rd minute. Benzema passed the ball towards Ronaldo who went inside the penalty area and fired a wonderful volley that gave Oblak no chance.

Ronaldo completed his hat trick on the 85th minute. Lucas Vazquez went past Diego Godin and served the unmarked Ronaldo whose cool finish went inside the net to make it 3-0.
