Portugal created the first chance of the match after two minutes. Andre` Gomes fired a shot from outside the penalty area that was neutralised by Claudio Bravo.

Chile lost a good chance on the 6th minute. Alexis Sanchez sent Eduardo Vargas through on goal and the Chilean striker went inside the penalty area but found Rui Patricio in his way.

A minute later, it was Portugal’s turn to lose a great chance. Ronaldo sent a cross towards the unmarked Andre` Silva whose effort was blocked by Bravo.

Chile threatened again on the 28th minute. Mauricio Isla sent a cross that was met by Charles Aranguiz who headed over.

On the 53rd minute, Chile had another opportunity on goal. Jean Beausejour curled a cross in the direction of Arturo Vidal and the latter sent a header that failed to hit the target.

Four minutes later, Chile were denied by Rui Patricio. Vargas sent an overhead kick from inside the penalty area that forced a good save from the Portugaese goalkeeper.

On the other end, Cristiano Ronaldo’s powerful shot was well saved by Bravo.

On the 63rd minute, Vidal’s long range shot went slightly over.

The next chance of the match came for Portugal on the 85th minute. Cedric’s cross was met by Ronaldo who headed wide.

In the remaining minutes, neither team managed to break the deadlock as the game went into extra time.

On the 95th minute, Sanchez was unlucky not to send Chile ahead. Isla went on the right flank and sent a cross towards the Arsenal man. However, his header ended up centimetres wide.

Chile were denied twice by the post on the 118th minute. First it was Vidal who lashed a terrific shot that hit the post. Rebound fell for substitute Martin Rodriguez who hit the woodwork again in front of an open goal.

With neither team finding the break through, the game went into the drama of penalties.

In the penalty shoot-out, Portugal failed to convert a single penalty past Bravo as Ricardo Quaresma, Jao Moutinho and Nani all saw their shots being saved by the Chilean goalkeeper. On the other hand, Vidal, Aranguiz and Sanchez scored for the South American champions.

Following this result, Chile will now play Sunday’s final, while Portugal will compete for third place.
