The Premier League Standing Committee held another meeting with the MFA’s top officials at the Qormi Stadium yesterday evening to discuss a new proposal which would see the number of foreign players being registered with local clubs being reduced to seven, and not eight as had originally being proposed.  The proposal would also mean that clubs would have to make sure that a number of home grown players be included in their list of players in a move that should go down well the club’s supporters and general Football followers.

The MFA’s reported proposal to the PDSC, maintains that clubs should have a minimum of five home grown players in their starting line -up and another four home grown players in the reserves list.  This proposal according to the MFA would be beneficial to the development of players coming through the ranks as well as serving as the ideal incentive for the players to work harder and make it to the senior teams.  Should such a proposal be carried forward clubs would then be eligible to field six foreign players in their starting line-up.

During yesterday’s meeting, the PDSC suggested that while there needs to be an agreement on the number of foreign players being registered, they seemed to indicate they are in favour of the inclusion of seven foreign players, with all players possibly coming from outside the EU.  The counter proposal from the PDSC then, also means the inclusion of four home grown player from the first team as opposed to the MFA’S five.

Meanwhile, the PDSC and the MFA are close to reaching an agreement with regards to the player’s parameters and salary caps, with the PDSC proposing for the parameters to be reduced by 30-50% while suggesting the permanent removal of salary caps.
