Perisic leaves it late to salvage point for Inter at lowly Verona

Goals from Mauro Icardi and Ivan Perisic help Inter come back from two goals down to claim dramatic 3-3 draw at bottom placed Hellas Verona

Inter Milan came back from two goals down to salvage a point at bottom club Hellas Verona on Sunday in a match that did little to reignite their fading Seria A title hopes.

The 3-3 draw leaves Inter fourth on 45 points, eight behind leaders Napoli and six adrift of second-place Juventus, who play Carpi and Frosinone respectively later on Sunday.

Inter started off brightly and controlled the opening exchanges before going in front as Jeison Murillo leapt highest to head Marcelo Brozovic’s conner into the bottom right-hand corner. But Inter’s defence was stunned by two Verona goals, just five minutes after Inter’s strike,

First Filip Helander levelled with a powerful header from Luca Marrone’s corner and four minutes later, on the 16th minute, another set piece delivered by Luca Marrone was planted into the bottom corner by the unmarked Eros Pisano.

Inter went close to an equaliser with a Brozovic volley, and almost scored the second goal early in the second half. However, Inter’s wastefulness in front of goal was punished 12 minutes into the second half as another set piece delivered by Luca Marrone was headed past Inter custodian Samir Handanovic by Verona midfielder Artur Ionita.

Inter later responded through Mauro Icardi in the 61st minute before Ivan Perisic – who came on Felipe Melo early in the second half – tapped in Eder’s excellent low delivery to level things up.

In a frantic ending Gilberto Junior hit the outside of the post for Verona and Juan Gomez saw an audacious long-range chip go just wide, while at the other end an unmarked Icardi wastefully headed wide from eight yards as the sides were forced to settle for a point a piece.

Inter’s draw means that Roberto Mancini’s side won just six points from a possible 15 points. Inter remain in fourth place, a point off Fiorentina in third place and four points ahead of fifth placed Roma.

Luigi Delneri’s Verona, who not won a Seria A match this season before a midweek victory over Atalanta, extend their unbeaten run to give games, but will be disappointed at having let a two-goal lead slip. They remain rooted at the bottom of the table on 15 points, nine points off safety.
