Gżira held the initiative in the early stages and went close when from Ledesma’s freekick, Robert de Pinho Souza attempted a header from close-range that was saved by Andrea Cassar.

Tarxien responded through Alex Nilsson who attempted an acrobatic kick that went just wide.

Jacques Scerri's side kept getting better and  managed to go in front on the brink of half time when Daniel Pone de Leon Garcia fired a low shot from outside the penalty area that ended up behind Jurgen Borg.

On the 50th minute, Tarxien missed an excellent opportunity after Pedrinho found Nilsson in an open goal situation, but the Swedish player failed to make contact with the ball.

On the 62nd minute, the Maroons were close as Diamoutene met Ledesma’s corner, but his header was slightly deflected.

Ten minutes from time, Gżira had another excellent opportunity when Cassar failed to hold the ball after saving Ledesma’s free kick, and Daniel Zerafa cleared off the line.

Gżira’s efforts paid off three minutes into stoppage time when from Ledesma’s corner, Tony headed the ball behind Cassar to earn Gżira their first point in the premier league.

The match was controlled by Alan Mario Sant.
