Borussia Dortmund made a flying start to the match as they went ahead after just four minutes. From a corner, Christian Pulisic sent a cross that found Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who headed past Ederson Moraes.

The German side kept putting pressure and had another good chance on the 11th minute. Following a fast counter attack, Ousmane Dembele hit a strong shot from the edge of the penalty area that went wide.

Benfica responded on the 24th minute. Nelson Semedo received the ball on the right flank and sent a dangerous cross inside the penalty area towards Franco Cervi. The Argentine hit a low shot that was neutralised by Roman Buerki.

Buerki was on the alert once more on the 32nd minute. Following a free kick, Pizzi delivered the ball inside the penalty area towards Luisao whose header was well saved by the Swiss goalkeeper.

On the 53rd minute, it was time for the Benfica goalkeeper to produce a good save. Lukasz Piszczek sent a through ball towards Aubameyang whose effort from close range was saved by the Benfica goalkeeper before the assistant referee raised his flag for an offside.

Ederson denied Aubameyang once more on the 58th minute. Pulisic sent a through ball towards his team mate who forced a good save from the twenty-three year old goalkeeper.

However, Ederson could not do anything a minute later. Piszczek sent a wonderful pass into the penalty area and Pulisic went clear of his marker and placed the ball inside the net.

Borussia Dortmund sealed their qualification two minutes later. Marcel Schmelzer drilled a precise cross inside the goal area towards Aubameyang who finished home from close range.

Dortmund nearly scored again on the 83rd minute. From a corner, Gonzalo Castro sent a dangerous cross towards Gonzalo Castro whose header hit the post.

Two minutes later, Dortmund scored again. Erik Durm went inside the penalty area and passed the ball towards Aubameyang. The Gabonese striker kept his composure and slotted the ball inside the net to score a hat-trick.
