But British driver Susie Wolff, the first woman to take part in a Grand Prix weekend for more than 20 years, had engine trouble with her Williams, which stopped on the second lap.

Just minutes later, her Williams team-mate Felipe Massa lost control on a corner, damaging his vehicle.

Wolff was only driving Valtteri Bottas's car in the first session.

The 31-year-old Scot, who described it as a "tough day" said she had nonetheless learned things which she could take with her to practice for the German Grand Prix later in the month.

The German Rosberg set a time of 1 minute 35.424 seconds, well clear of Briton Hamilton who was 0.731 second behind.

Spain's Fernando Alonso of Ferrari was third, ahead of Red Bull's Australian, Daniel Ricciardo.

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen of Finland was fifth, with Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel of Germany in sixth.

Britain's Jenson Button of McLaren was seventh fastest, ahead of Russian Daniil Kvyat of Toro Rosso and Kevin Magnussen of Denmark, in a McLaren.

Toro Rosso's Jean-Eric Vergne was 10th, in front of Sergio Perez of Force India and Romain Grosjean of Lotus.

The second practice session is taking place later Friday.
