Charlotte Wingfield eliminated in the first round of the women’s 100m

After placing first in the preliminaries with a result of 11.86 seconds, the Maltese athlete failed to go through to the semi-final as she ended up 57th in round 1 with a result of 11.90 seconds.

Yesterday, Wingfield managed to follow Diane’s Borg footsteps after passing through the preliminary round of the women’s 100m. Borg achieved this during 2012 Olympics in London.

Despite this success, the 22 year old was unable to become the first ever Maltese athlete to go through to the semi-final as she was eliminated in round 1early this morning.

The race was won by Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce from Jamaica who managed to achieve a result of 10.96 seconds. She was followed by Michelle-Lee Ahye from Trinidad and Tobago who placed second with a result of 11.00 seconds, just ahead of Marie-Josee Ta Lou from the Ivory Coast who finished the race in 11.01 seconds.

The semi-finals will now take place tonight at 02:00 (local time).
