Bonello master at Zurrieq as Formosa and Pace crowned champions

It was an exhilarating final round of the road race national championship on the zurrieq-mqabba circuit held earlier this month. Etienne Bonello of Team Greens had the upper hand in the final sprint after a gruelling 100km of racing.

The Cyclist duo Maurice Formosa and Hannah Pace were claimed road race national champions at the end.

The race at Zurrieq proved to be hghly contested with the overall title still up for grabs in a tightly contested championship over three rounds. The race was very nervous from start to finish. It was very clear that team work was key as all major clubs came out in full force to bring their leader as far up as possible in the race.

It was Team Greens and Agones who went on the attack many a time however The Cyclist kept the race knot for championship leader Formosa up till the finish. Into the final metres Team Greens emerged stronger with Etienne Bonello winning the final sprint with Christian Formosa in third place. Older sibling Maurice Formosa finished second  earning him enough points to  claim the overall title after winning the first two opening rounds.

The Cyclist also celebrated with Hannah Pace who became the new female national champion after winning two rounds.  The road racing will come to an end with the final round of the time trial national championship with the season ending hill climb at Mizieb.  The race was run smooth by the Malta Cycling Federation with the aid and collaboration of the Zurrieq and Qrendi local council, the Malta Police, B'kara St Joseph Time keepers as well as club delegates and volunteers.
