Jockey picks up Gozitan sportsman of the year award

Jockey Marvin Cauchi and Gozo FC player Emma Fenech have picked up the Gozitan sportsman and sportswoman of the year awards respectively.

The awards ceremony, which was held by the Gozo Sports Board after a 13-year-absence, also saw Maria Farrugia and Christian Theuma pick up the best youth awards for their performances in football and waterpolo respectively.

Gozitan waterpolo team Otters was voted as the team of the year in recognition of their 32-year participation in the national waterpolo league, while Ghajnsielem Redcoats official Josef Scicluna picked up the official of the year for successfully introducing baseball and softball in Gozo.

The awards ceremony also saw Joe Psaila winning a special honorary prize for his work in the local sports scene during the years. The ceremony, while was held at the Gozo sports complex in Victoria, was also attended by Gozo minister Anton Refalo, Parliamentary secretary for sports Chris Agius, as well as Gozo Sports Board CEO Alvin Grech and other officials.

In his address, Refalo called on Gozitan youths to participate in sports, and explained that the building of a new swimming pool in Gozo will soon become a reality. On his part, parliamentary secretary for sports Chris Agius also said that the government would soon issue an expression of interest for the development of an improved horse track in Marsa, a new shooting range.
