Fifty Four athletes have registered to undertake the full distance which will see them cover 113 kilometres, split into a swim of 1.9km, a cycle of 90km and a half marathon - i.e. 21km run.  24 teams will be taking part in the relay team, a three fold increase from last year.

“It is interesting to note that quite a few athletes who compete in a relay team progress to the full distance in the following year”, said Race Director Charles Demanuele.  “This year we are proud to have achieved our target of increasing international participation, with Italy, UK, Slovenia, Slovakia and Poland being represented”.

The race was also designated as the Long Distance National Championships by the Malta Triathlon Federation and will also garner points in the Go&Fun Triathlete of the Year Award.

Last year’s Champions, David Galea and Michelle Vella Wood,  will be returning on the starting line to defend their titles. In the men’s category Galea will have to battle off the determined attempts of seasoned long distance triathletes Dermot Galea,  race winner in 2012, former national champion ten times over and the only Maltese athlete to qualify and successfully race in the coveted Ironman World Championships in Hawaii,  as well as established long distance triathletes and race podium finishers Fabio Spiteri and Rudolph Agius.

In the female category Michelle Vella Wood, will seek to retain her title for a sixth time. This year Vella Wood will battle it out with fellow National Team member Margaret Seguna who makes a welcome return to the race after a three year absence. They will be joined by  previous podium winners Donatelle Camilleri, Suzanne Farrugia and 1993 female National Champion Angele Cremona.

The Relay category sees a veritable who’s who of athletes from the three disciplines such as Keith Galea (Triathlon), Sarah Demicoli (Swimming), Josann Attard Pulis (Running) and Wayne Spiteri (Cycling.
