Kyle Micallef sets new national record

The Malta Weightlifting Association (MWA) organized the Malta National Championship on Sunday, 15 November at the Cottonera Sports Complex.

The first competition of the championship consisted of Under 13 boys and girls. The first place in the boy’s category was won by Rylee Borg 116 points followed by Kyle Camilleri 97 points and Kayden Psaila 81 points. Many of the athletes were their first competition experience where they gave very good performance together with great technique.

In second group consisted of female athletes, with the best results coming from Pamela Psaila winning the overall group, she lifted a total of 134kg, as well as setting two national records in the 63kg category, she was followed by Nathalie Borg with 107kg.
The 69kg category was won by Yazmine Zammit Stevens by lifting the total of 124kg. In this category guest athlete Chole Cassar had an excellent performance lifting the total of 139kg.

Other positive results came from Elisa Scicluna, who totaled 120kg and Kristen Borg with a total of 94kg.
Good performance from two new comers Sarah Shawky with a total of 71kg and Shazel Guzman 15 year athlete with the total of 67kg.
 
The third competition of the event was much fiercer than expected; the male athletes gave their best performance yet: With the best results coming from Kyle Micallef winning the overall, he lifted a total of 261kg, as well as setting new national records in the 85kg category with 121kg Snatch, this record was unbeatable for these past 9 years. In second place Rodmar Pulis with the total of 246kg and Matthew Camilleri 217kg.

The 94kg category was won by Ryan Agius with the total of 236kg followed by Anton Micallef with the total of 204kg. Martin Pisani claimed 1st place in the 105+kg with the total of 238kg. The men youth category was won by Owen Bugeja with the total of 197kg in the 85kg category and Andy Grech 169kg in the 77kg category.

The competitions were refereed by three female officials, Ramona Borg, Rodienne Balzan and Gayle Caruana, they were assisted by Alfred Ellul Mercer and Stephen Borg.

After these nationals the MWA technical committee will select the teams to prepare for the next international competitions next year.
After the excellent performance of Kyle Micallef he won the place to represent Malta in the Qatar International next December.
