Youth Rugby programme kicks off Sunday 14 November

The Malta Rugby Football Union (MRFU) will launch the Youth Rugby season on Sunday 14th November with a Registration Day at the Marsa Grounds organized by the various rugby clubs.

The aim of this initiative is to introduce new players to a format which will be adopted over a six week period. MRFU’s annual youth rugby programme is endorsed by GasanMamo Insurance, who have been supporting the youth section since 2006.

Essentially, players will follow a programme allowing them to be IRB rugby ready, with sessions delivered by national players, the national coach and club coaches. IRB Rugby Ready is a model of good practice for players, coaches and referees in preparation to play the game. It includes models of good practice for physical conditioning, technique and injury prevention.

“Young boys and girls interested in playing rugby, those wanting a taster of the sport and others that are perhaps just curious are urged to come down to Marsa to watch the games, speak to club members and find out all about what’s in store for next season,” said Damian Neill, national coach from MRFU.

“Our aim is to deliver best ever age grade rugby and a six-week programme based on fun, enjoyment and sound technical and tactical games,” continued Neill. Commenting on the weekend’s international, he added, “I know that many of our youngsters were watching the match and while this particular result was disappointing, the passion and commitment of the players was outstanding, an attitude I hope our new recruits will aspire to.”

“The start of the youth rugby season marks an exciting time for us at GasanMamo,” said Julian J. Mamo, Director. “Our support for a sport through which young people can develop, grow and learn is based on the company’s vision for corporate social responsibility initiatives that aim to provide opportunities for young people and to help improve people’s lives.”

The day starts off at 9.30 am till 12.30 pm, and entrance is through Pitch 1. Each club - Gladiators, Alligators, Valletta, Kavallieri, Falcons, Stompers and Overseas - have pulled together a variety of age grades from U9 to U17. Each group will start with a 'masterclass' with national players & club coaches followed by a series of short mini-matches. Clubs will play on various areas around the pitch.
