Matthew Asciak - Malta Tennis Champion for 10 consecutive years

Matthew Asciak and Rosanne Dimech won the Men’s and ladies Malta Open Tennis  Championships  held at the Marsa Sports Club and sanctioned by the Malta Tennis Federation.  Matthew Asciak, following his father’s footsteps, Gordon Asciak,  underlined his status as Malta’s leading tennis player after he successfully retained the Gatorade  Malta Open Tennis Championships .  

Asciak won the title, for the first time as a 15 year old  and is now 24. On the way to the final, Asciak the no.1 seed,  disposed of Miguel Rico-Bernabe 6-0 6-0 in the 1st round .  Quarter-final  Zac Ciappara 6-0 6-0,  In the semi-final he overcame Bradley Callus 6-0 6-1 and in the final Matthew Asciak was in a class of his own and  overpowered Denzil Aguis 6-0 6-0. Aguis, on the way to the final  eliminated Julian Sammut 6-0 6-0 in the 1st round ,  quarter-final Domenico Scordo 6-07-5  and in the semi-final got the better of Mark Gatt 2-6 7-5 6-0

 In the women’s event ,  In the 1st round, Rosanne Dimech overcame the no.2 seed Brenda Galea 6-0 6-2.  In the semi-final overpowered Valerija Holomjova 6-0 6-0.  In the final match Dimech faced Katrina Sammut, although trailing 2-6 3-4, she managed to turn the match around and clinch the title against the 15 year old and the No.1 seed Katrina Sammut, 2-6 7-5 6-3.   

Sammut played an excellent match, however Dimech got better as the match progressed. Sammut , who in the last few months improved immensely,  beat Steffi Sullivan 6-2 6-1 ,  Giorgia Farrugia Sacco in the semi-finals 6-0 6-0 to make it to the finals for the 2nd consecutive year.  Last Year’s Malta Open Lady Champion, Elaine Genovese  was indisposed.

Matthew Asciak and Bradley Callus retained  the Men’s Doubles title overcoming Denzil Aguis and Mark Gatt in the final 6-2 6-4.

The Chairman of the Marsa Tennis Section, Mr.Godwin Borg, together with the president of the Malta Tennis Federation, Dr. David farrugia Sacco distributed trophies to the winners and runners-up and thanked the sponsors of the Malta Open Championships GATORADE.
