‘Genius of Mintoff’? Hardly

So Raymond Sammut believes government intervention in today’s financial crisis proves that Mintoff was right in the case of the National Bank, does he? (‘The genius of Mintoff and the National Bank saga’, 11 January).
Government intervention in the current crisis is aimed at shoring up the banks. Mintoff’s intervention in the case of the National Bank was intended to bring it down. Among other things, he prevented the central bank – a supposedly autonomous institution – from fulfilling its role as lender of last resort. It doesn’t take much genius to see that Mintoff’s action was, in fact, the opposite of what is happening today.
One wonders at the presumption of the Raymond Sammuts of this world. Despite seeing a parallel were none exists, he takes it on himself to offer advice to the bank’s shareholders. For the sake of schoolchildren everywhere, I hope that this man is not a teacher.
