APS Bank has appointed Martin Scicluna as chairman of its board of directors, with effect from 1 September 2021. He takes over from Frederick Mifsud Bonnici.

Scicluna has been a non-executive director of APS since 2013 and most recently serving as chairman of the risk committee, member of the audit and ESG committees, and director of ReAPS Asset Management, the bank’s wholly-owned UCITS management subsidiary.

His long career in banking culminated in a stretch of senior executive appointments with HSBC Group in Malta, between 1996 and 2012.

Having held various director roles since 2006, his other current board positions are: chairman Accredited Insurance (Europe), chairman Zarattini International, independent non-executive director and investment committee member at Merck Capital Asset Management and Thybo Maltaa.

Scicluna has also been actively engaged in various areas of voluntary work, including scouting, preservation of the built and natural environment and financial services education. He has served on the Boards of Administration of NGOs such as Din l-Art Ħelwa (Malta’s ‘National Trust’) and the HSBC Malta Foundation.

CEO Marcel Cassar commented: “On behalf of the entire Management body, we welcome Martin Scicluna who brings with him a long, successful career in banking and financial services besides intimate knowledge of the Bank, having served as Director for the past 8 years. Martin’s appointment also signifies the trust in which he is held by the shareholders, ideally placing him to lead the Board in the next stages of the Bank’s development. It is also a fitting opportunity to thank and salute Frederick Mifsud Bonnici who retires after 4 years as Chairman and Director, during which the Bank was able to benefit from his 50 years of senior experience in accounting, assurance and financial services.”
