Archbishop Charles J Scicluna has presented a Maltese themed nativity crib to Pope Francis, which is on display at Saint Peter’s Square, in the Vatican City.

The crib, the work of Gozitan artist Manwel Grech, is topped by a beautiful fir tree, donated by Trentino Alto Adige.

Scicluna presented the luzzu as “a colourful boat of fishermen”, representing the boats and ships that crossed Malta’s millennial history.

“The luzzu in Saint Peter’s Square becomes for us a celebration of our roots, of the encounter with the Apostle of the Gentiles. But it is also an urgent appeal for a generous commitment of welcome to the people who today cross the Mediterranean in search of our solidarity,” Scicluna told the Pope.

A statue of Saint George Preca forms part of the statuettes of this year’s nativity crib.
