In a message on World Environment Day, Alternattiva Demokratika deputy chairperson Carmel Cacopardo has lauded environmental NGOs which during the past twelve months presented a common front in their environmental activities.

“It was very satisfying that for the first time ever, a substantial number of environmental NGOs joined Alternattiva Demokratika in setting up the Coalition for the Abolition of Spring Hunting calling for an abrogative referendum, such that decisions which Parliament has failed to take in the past years will be acted upon by the electorate through the use of its vote in a referendum,” Cacopardo said.

“During the comning months, this coordinated activity has to intensify due to the fact that government is continuously manifesting its lack of sensitivity towards its international obligations towards biodiversity through its intention to permit once more permit bird trapping.

“No one should be afraid when confronted with an anti-democratic attitude which is seeking to severely curtail the right to hold an abrogative referendum.”

Cacopardo said Alternattiva Demokratika was proud that during its 25 years of existence it had been the only political party in Malta which had expressed itself and acted on these matters.
