Six white storks settled at the golf course this morning.

A flock of white storks that has been in Malta since Monday includes three storks from a conservation reintroduction project in Italy that are on its first ever migration south to Africa. The flock was targeted in Marsa on Tuesday and one of the three storks from the Italian scheme was killed.

Three off-duty police officers who were nearby heard the shots being fired, saw the bird go down and apprehended the shooter, 26-year-old Giljan Tanti.

Tanti was banned for life from hunting, fined €5,000 and handed a three-month prison sentence suspended for a year.

The police said that it would file an appeal before the Attorney General and seek n effective prison term, rather than a suspended one. The government has backed this appeal.en
