Two turtles were released into Gnejna Bay on Thursday morning, an activity organized by Nature Trust (Malta) and EkoSkola.

“This occasion is much more than a happy celebration,” Environment Minister Leo Brincat said, during his visit to Gnejna Bay. “This is an occasion where we are reminded how important it is to conserve and preserve nature, as well as to awake a national consciousness about this importance.

“When we speak about biodiversity, we don’t just speak about it as an abstract term but as everything alive in this world- including species like these turtles that make so many people happy.”

He also appealed for more research to be carried out on turtle conservation.

“Despite it being over 40 years old, the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) treaty remains one of the best international treaties where the regulation of wildlife species in concerned,” Brincat said.
